The damsel is neither in distress, nor a much of a damsel, and there's certainly no love to 'win'. Meanwhile the hero is more a naive oaf than a knight in shining armour. The story then still seems to superficially adhere to the stereotype as the hero goes on his epic quest to 'save' his love. But the ending completes the subversion when the hero instead of 'marrying the princess' just leaves her and goes to have new adventures of his own. Despite it's simplicity it's actually pretty complex and subtle the way it subverts and criticises some of the old conventions of romance and coming-of-age stories.

It's a journey of self-discovery. The protagonist starts as a naive, love-struck boy, who assumed that his crush has been taken by bandits bearing a triangular symbol. Determined to rescue her, he sets out on a long journey. He's enslaved, marooned, and nearly killed (multiple times). But he overcomes. He learns, and he grows. By the time he finds his "love," her outward appearance matches her character. She's a leech. It turns out she wasn't kidnapped. She left with a decadent foreign king out of greed. But, now that our hero is a strapping warrior, she's more than happy to take him. Through the mirror, the hero sees who he's become (and recognizes what he's accomplished). He doesn't need her. He never did. The comic ends with "Start" because the protagonist's adventure has just begun.
